This diminutive hand-carved Edo period Japanese sculpture of Jizo, a bosatsu (Buddhist saint), dates to the mid-19th century. This is a fine example of the distinctive style of stone Jizo which originated from Sadogashima, an island in the Japan Sea off the coast of Niigata Prefecture long famous for its production of small-scale stone sculptures of Jizo. This handsome miniature chest of drawers (“ko dansu” or “ko bako”) is meticulously hand crafted with contrasting hardwood inlays in an overall diagonal checkerboard pattern. Meiji period (1868-1912). On both sides of the chest, cut out finger holes are carved in the shape of pine boughs to facilitate lifting and carrying the chest. This heavily-potted and molded Hizen Arita porcelain charger in octagonal form is decorated with thick overglaze enamels and sits atop a high combed foot rim. Early Meiji period, ca.1870. The reverse is signed in overglaze red enamel “Hichozan Shinpo Sei” (Made by Hichozan Shinpo). Housed in its original signed wooden storage box (“tomobako”), this unusual ceramic sake set in classic Chinese fa-hua style is of Japanese origin and dates to the late Meiji period, ca. 1880-1912. The two sake flasks (“tokkuri”) are signed on the bottom in underglaze blue with the six character mark which reads “Dai Nippon Eiraku Zo” (Eiraku made).
