Details: A superb and rare example of an East Indian bronze seated Buddha with silver inlaid eyes. I initially thought this piece to be of Himalayan origin, however on a recent research trip to the British Museum in London I noticed an identical, but larger piece. The image was listed as East Indian and came with the following quote: “Buddhist missionaries carried sculptures like this to Tibet, especially during the 11th and 12th centuries, where Indian bronzes were often painted.” This example retains traces of blue pigment on the Buddha’s tightly curled hair as well as some of the original gilding on the Buddha’s face, especially around the left ear. The Buddha is seated in vajrasana (diamond throne) posture on a circular lotus base, in bhumisparsha mudra (calling the earth to witness). His face is tranquil and contented with plump smiling lips and open silver inlaid eyes below his urna. He has elongated earlobes, traditional tightly curled hair knots and lotus bud usnisha. Age: 12th Century Height: 9.5 cm Width: 7 cm Remarks: In excellent condition. |
