Details: This is a classic example of a very early Mon type Dvaravati Buddha. Buddha is elegant with both his hands in vitarkamudra and wearing a long clinging robe covering both his shoulders. His handsome face carries a serene expression with a deep contented smile below half closed heavy lidded eyes. Notice also his attractive hair arranged in tight curls around a high usnisa topped with a lotus bud and his naturalistic long pendulous ears. This bust of Buddha would have originally stood erect, being part of a larger standing piece, however over time the bust has become separated from the lower part of his body. Age: 8th-9th Century Height: 23.5 cm including base, 15.5cm excluding base. Remarks: Thie piece was once part of the Alex Biancardi collection. |
