A Superb Japanese “Daimyo” Gold Lacquer and Basketwork Box. Edo Period
Size; 12 x 10 ½ x 3 ¾ ins. (30.5 x 26.7 x 9.5 cms) The use of lacquer on fine basket work is unusual but not unique. There are several fine pieces in Japanese museums, some of which are National Treasures. The very fine basket work does not appear to be split bamboo, the large filaments are held together by a thinner, twisted filament which could be bamboo. The gold lacquer is of very fine quality, the interior design of the ...click for details

A Superb Japanese Gold Lacquer "Kogo" (Incense Container) Edo Period
Max. length 2 11/16 ins. (6.9 cms) This "kogo" is of the finest quality. The design on the lid is slightly puzzling as we cannot identify the central motif which appears to represent some sort of textile object with two elaborate tassels. It lays on a branch of sakura (cherry blossom), the lower cord depicted partly under a blossom. The elaborate background represents brocade beautifully rendered in gol ...click for details

A Unusual Japanese Lidded Lacquer Box. Edo Period.
Diam. 3 5/8 ins. (9.2 cms) This delightful box features a design of geese on a lakeside flanked by bamboos. It is executed in raised moulded and sculpted lacquer of different colours, two tones of green, brown, two tones of red and buff. The technique is commonly associated with the Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa) but this example was more likely to have been made on the Japanese mainland. On the black ground on the lid the underlying layer of clo ...click for details
