This large and impressive pottery jar was made during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220). It is made from a red pottery that has been coated in an attractive and very unusual finely-crackled and translucent yellowish-green glaze. On opposing sides at the waist are moulded taotie mask handles, and additional decoration in the form of bands of ridges around the waist, shoulder and mouth. The drips of glaze around the mouth show that this jar was fired upside down. "Spur" marks on both the rim and base are the result of spacers separating jars from each other whilst they were in the kiln being fired stacked on top of each other.

We actually bought this jar around 15 years ago when such jars were much easier to buy, but have only recently had it TL tested prior to offering it for sale; we show the TL test certificate that will accompany this jar, confirming the date of manufacture as "between 1,500 and 2,400 years ago".

Height 38 cm (15 inches), diameter 34 cm.. This is an exceptional example in fine condition with no sign of restoration or repair.
