A Pair of Chinese Ming Dynasty Painted Pottery Tiles - Birds & Blossoms
This attractive pair of pottery tiles was made during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) and originally would have been part of a frieze on a wall comprising several similar tiles. They are "heavily-potted" and feature birds perched on the branch of a blossoming tree. Note the detail to the bird's feathers and the flower petals. Good traces of various coloured pigments remain. By their very nature, the majority of such tiles have been repaired: the right tile has been broken into two pieces and re-stuck, and there are also some small repairs and losses. Combined length 77 cm (30 inches), height 12 cm (4.75 inches), weight 8.35 kg (18.5 lbs).
