Tall Chinese Han Dynasty Yangling Stick Figure +TL Test
Tall Chinese Han Dynasty Yangling Stick Figure with Oxford TL Test

This tall and impressive pottery "Yangling" figure was made during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220), more specifically, the 2nd century BC. It is "heavily-potted" and made from a dense fine-grained pottery that has been "cold painted" with a pink/brown flesh-coloured pigment on top of which the facial features have been picked-out in black and red pigments. These figures were made in separate sections, head, body, legs, most likely with different potters specialising in each part for more efficient production. The parts were then luted together prior to firing and then cold painted after firing.

Various types of Yangling figures have been excavated, although none have arms; it is believed that such figures originally had wooden articulated arms that have, of course, long since rotted away.

This is a tall figure with a height of 58 cm (22.75 inches). There is minor surface wear and a chip to the back of the head. Realistically there is most likely some repair and/or restoration, although any such repairs have clearly been performed to a professional standard as none are immediately obvious. This is a nice example in very good condition.

We have had this figure tested by Oxford Authentications, the only testers of ancient pottery accepted by all major dealers, auction houses and museums worldwide, and the Thermoluminescence Analysis Report that will accompany this item is shown; this confirms the date of manufacture as "between 1500 and 2400 years ago".
