| A Chinese Watercolour Painting on Paper by Wang Yuchen 1894-1983 Diameter of painting without mount 12 ins. (30.5 cms) Wang Yuchen was born in Hangzhou. In 1915 he, Chen Baoyi and others founded the first painting organisation in China, The Orient Painting Society. In 1916 he studied in Japan and returned to China the same year taking a post as a director at the Shanghai Art Academy. From 1928 to 1931 he toured Europe. Returning to China he held the post of Dean of Studies at Xinhua Art School. In 1947 he gave lectures in the USA and held exhibitions there to publicize Chinese painting. He returned to China in 1980 and died in Shanghai in 1983. We do not know which variety of fish is depicted in this painting but he was well-known for his paintings of gold fish. Some of his paintings have fetched high prices in China e.g. in October 2004 a painting of goldfish made 28,690 HKD and in November 2005 a painting made 960,000 HKD. The painting is in good condition. On the right hand side are some faint grey spots in the paper, the blue silk mount is a little soiled and there is a brown stain on the edge at about 1 o'clock. The reverse has a few pieces of paper gummed around the edge having been fixed to a piece of paper. | ||
