Superb Japanese Arita Blue & White Porcelain Jar 17th.c
A Rare & Large Japanese Blue & White Arita Porcelain Jar. Edo Period ca. 1680

Ht. 10 1/2 ins (26.7 cms) This superb jar has three panels, all similar with iris plants at the bottom right, but each of a different tree or shrub amid stylised cloud motifs. One is a beautiful design of a weeping willow, another of what maybe a peony bush and the third unidentified. The three panels are separated by designs of scrolling grasses (karakusa) and flower heads and leaves. Around the shoulders are the three familiar Arita repeat patterns often encountered on 17th. century Arita porcelain. As is usually the case with these jars the cover is not present. On the neck is a fine quality Japanese real gold lacquer repair to a chip. There is no restoration and no cracks.

These splendid jars are one of the classics of Edo period Japanese ceramics and have a quintessentially Japanese feeling quite different form contemporary Chinese porcelain. This is a particularly appealing example on account of the willow tree.
