A Rare Japanese Kyoyaki Enamelled Stoneware Box. 19th. Century

6 7/8 x 5 1/2 x 2 ins. (17.4 x 14 x 5 cms) As Kyoto was the literary capital of Japan it is not unexpected that the Kyoto potters should produce a box in the form of a set of three books. The details are beautifully rendered, the book stitching in red, the vestiges of the black title printing on the folded edges of the leaves, and the elaborately enamelled lid simulating a brocade cover with a patterned title cartouche. The colour scheme is very typical of Kyoto pottery with extensive use of blue enamel together with red, green, dark grey and gilding. The body is the usual buff stoneware of Kyo-yaki.

The various areas of damage have been beautifully repaired with gold lacquer in the traditional Japanese way. The lid is slightly warped which, although probably accidental, lends a remarkable verisimilitude to the soft flexible nature of a real book. It dates from the 19th. century.
