| A Rare Complete Set of 5 Woodblock Prints by Kamei Tobei (1901-77) Folder 14 x 10 1/2 ins. (35.5 x 26.6 cms) This set of 5 prints was commissioned by the 13th. generation owner of the Owariya Soba Shop in Kyoto in the Taisho period, 1912-26. The present owner, the 15th. generation, says they were given to a small number of clients. The shop still exists and was founded in 1465 AD. Kamei Tobei was a member of the Sosaku Hanga movement and was a very interesting artist with a variety of styles ranging from very schematic and odd pictures of military vehicles to the wonderfully individual designs of this set. He was also responsible for a beautiful set of block printed postcards of views in and around Kyoto some of which are very striking and eccentric. His designs largely avoid the sentimentality which affects the work of so many of his contemporaries. In 1953 he changed his name to Genbei Tobei. The titles of the views are, from top to bottom, 1) Night View of Cherry Blossoms, 2) the Owariya Soba Shop (still used in their advertising today), 3) Autumn View of Ohara (this is an odd view which appears to be a crowd viewing a firework display), 4) Evening Breeze along the Kamo River and 5) Snowscape at Kinkakuji Temple. All the prints are tipped-in (not laid down) on thick hand-made paper backing. The folder is a bit shabby, stained, soiled and foxed. Print 3 is foxed and toned both on the print and the backing. Print 5 is also foxed. The remaining three prints are in very good condition. There are no repairs anywhere. The foxed prints could probably be improved by a good restorer. | |||||||||
