Japanese Bronze Figure of Bull. Kome Jiichi 1896-1985
A Fine Japanese Bronze Bull by Jiichi Kome (1896-1985) Length 10 ins. (25.3 cms) Jiichi Kome, a fine and original artist who is little known in the West, graduated from the Tokyo Art School in 1921 where he had been studying with the celebrated sculptor Takamura Koun. In 1924 he sold work to the Japanese Royal Family. Takaoka City made an award to him in 1963 and in 1966 he made a bronze Phoenix which was installed on the roof of the Imperial Palace. In 1968 he won a prize from Toyama Prefecture and in 1971 received a prize and decoration from the Japanese Government. Also in 1971 he made a large bronze sculpture of Shimpei Goto which was erected in Mizusawa Park in Oshu City, Tohoku Prefecture. His style is clearly influenced by Western artists of the Art Deco Movement and by artists such as Brancusi whose work largely eschews surface decoration. It is probably relevant that he graduated in 1921 when the Art Deco Movement was at its most creative. It is in fine condition with a beautiful patina. On the bull's left hand side are a series of short grooves or scratches which are difficult to explain and which seem to originate in the casting (see photos). The bull has Jiichi's incised signature underneath.
