Rare Large Chinese Neolithic Xindian Pottery Jar
Rare Large Chinese Neolithic Xindian Pottery Jar

This rare pottery jar was made around 3,000 years ago by peoples of the Neolithic Xindian culture (c. 1200 - 500 BC). Although the Xindian culture is a relatively late Neolithic culture and overlaps with the Chinese Bronze Age, Xindian pottery is often much "coarser" than earlier Neolithic pottery and does not always stand the test of time as can pottery from the earlier Chinese Neolithic cultures. A particularly large and impressive example of Xindian pottery, not only tall but with a good width as well. Quite an elaborate pattern and with the colour of the pottery varying greatly from orange to black, the variance caused during firing. Part of the mouth has been repaired, but a very fine example. Height 38 cm (15 inches).
