Chinese Neolithic Painted Pottery Jar - Machang Phase
Chinese Neolithic Painted Pottery Jar - Machang Phase

This twin-handled pottery jar was made over 4,000 years ago during the Machang Phase (c. 2300 - 2000 BC) of the Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture, from present day Gansu or Qinghai province. The pottery is quite thin and relatively highly-fired. The outside of the jar and the inner rim have been decorated with geometric patterns painted onto the surface in a mineral-based pigment, prior to firing in the Neolithic kiln.

Height 13.25 cm, diameter 16 cm. No repair or restoration; a lovely example in fine condition.
