Chinese Neolithic Painted Pottery Dish - Machang
This rare and unusual pottery dish was made over 4,000 years ago during the Machang Phase (c. 2300 - 2000 BC) of the Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture, from present day Gansu or Qinghai province. Although quite crude by the standard of some Machang pottery, it is very interesting. The underside shows the marks of the shaping tool and it can clearly be seen that a separate strip of clay was used to construct the rim. There are two lugs on opposing sides at the rim, each with a small hole. It has been decorated in geometric patterns with two different mineral-based pigments. In places on the underside are marks left by ancient root/plant growths during its long burial. Diameter 19.5 cm. Some surface wear. No repair or restoration. *** TO ORDER THIS ITEM PLEASE EMAIL US QUOTING OUR STOCK NUMBER (see above) - WE SHALL THEN EMAIL YOU BACK WITH POSTAGE COSTS AND PAYMENT INSTRUCTIONS *** *** FOR FULL DETAILS OF OUR GUARANTEE AND PAYMENT OPTIONS, PLEASE CLICK ON "Buying from us - All you need to know" ON OUR HOME PAGE *** |
