Very Rare Chinese Tang Dynasty Horse & "Fat Lady" Rider - Right-turned Head
This extremely rare model of a horse and rider was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). What makes it so very rare is that the horse's head is turned to the right instead of to the left, as are the vast majority of Tang pottery horses. Sitting on the horse is a female courtier, often referred to as a "fat lady"; note her clothing and hairstyle and also the detail to the horse's teeth. It is made from a buff-coloured pottery that has been "cold painted", mainly in a white pigment, but also with faint traces of red and green. Height 29 cm. There is no obvious sign of repair to the body, as is confirmed by shining a torch inside the hollow body. Possibly the fragile legs have been broken and re-stuck although this is not obvious if it is the case. The tip of one ear is chipped. A very rare example of Tang Dynasty equestrian pottery sculpture in fine condition. *** TO ORDER THIS ITEM PLEASE EMAIL US QUOTING OUR STOCK NUMBER (see above) - WE SHALL THEN EMAIL YOU BACK WITH POSTAGE COSTS AND PAYMENT INSTRUCTIONS *** *** FOR FULL DETAILS OF OUR GUARANTEE AND PAYMENT OPTIONS, PLEASE CLICK ON "Buying from us - All you need to know" ON OUR HOME PAGE *** |
