Rare Large Chinese Neolithic Pottery Jar - Machang
Rare Large Chinese Neolithic Pottery Jar - Machang

This very rare large pottery jar was made over 4,000 years ago during the Machang Phase (c. 2300 - 2000 BC) of the Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture, from present day Gansu or Qinghai province. It is quite "heavily-potted" and fairly coarsely made yet with a smooth burnished surface. It was clearly purposely-made without the usual neck, and addition to the usual two loop handles, there are two lugs at the shoulder on opposing sides. On the surface in places are limescale deposits and marks left by ancient plant/root growths from its long burial.

Diameter 29 cm (11.5 inches), height 22 cm (8.5 inches). No repair or restoration; a very rare vessel in fine good condition.
