Fine Chinese Neolithic Banpo Pottery Amphora
Fine Chinese Neolithic Banpo Pottery Amphora

This rare pottery amphora was made over 6,000 years ago during the Banpo phase (c. 4800 - 4300 BC). It is made from a buff-coloured pottery, quite "heavily-potted" and relatively highly-fired, both factors no doubt contributing to its survival over such a long period of burial. It has a fairly short neck with a flared mouth and there are two loop handles on opposing sides but not quite level with each other. Unusually, the end has been flattened off instead of ending in a point, although it does not quite stand unaided. Included is the custom-made display stand.

Height 29 cm (11.5 inches) off the stand. There is no sign of restoration or repair; this 6,000 year old amphora is in superb condition.
