Fine & Rare Chinese Northern Wei Dynasty Pottery Figure
Fine Chinese Northern Wei Dynasty Painted Pottery Figure

This impressive painted pottery figure was made during the Northern Wei Dynasty (AD 386 - 534). It is quite "heavily-potted" and a little taller than most known similar figures of this period. It has been "cold painted" in a base of white pigment with traces of red and black on top. Note especially the fine detail to the quilted clothing and the hairstyle. In the right hand is a purpose-made hole in which originally would have been placed a weapon or banner, now long since lost, presumably having been made of wood and rotted away.

Height 27.5cm (11 inches). Some surface wear but no obvious sign of restoration or repair; a fine example in fine condition.
