A Rare Boxed Set of Five Satsuma-Yaki Chawan. Edo Period
Box 6 x 6 x 2 1/4 ins. (15.3 x 15.34 x 5.3 cms) Diam. of cups 1 3/4 ins. (4.6 cms) Although these cups appear at first sight to be sake cups they are, in fact, tea cups used to drink the rarest and most expensive leaf teas. The inscription of the lid reads "Sencha. Chawan. (Sencha Tea. Tea Bowl. 5 pieces)." To the right it reads "Ko-Satsuma Yaki" (Old Satsuma Ware). The finely crackled buff glaze is typical of early Satsuma wares, much of which was undecorated, unlike the over-decorated late 19th. century export pottery. These bowls date from the 18th. century during the Edo Period, the beautifully made box is 20th. century.
Condition is very good. One cup has a tiny chip to the rim and another has a tiny old crack which may be a firing fault (see photos).
