A Fine Japanese or Ryukyuan Lacquer Panel. 19th. century

6 x 6 x 5/16 ins. (15.2 x 15.2 x 0.7 cms) This beautifully executed panel has a design of a bird perched on fruit tree branch depicted in raised lacquer. This is the same design as one of our other listed panels but executed in a different technique. Areas of the leaves are executed in "ishime" stone texture ground, a technique much used by Shibata Zeshin. The style is very much that of the Ryukyu Islands the art of which is, as a consequence of their history, often a mixture of Chinese and Japanese influences. The Ryukyuan style was very popular in Japan and it is very difficult to tell them apart.

The panel is in good condition, there are the expected minor bruises and "dings" to the surface and slight wear to the highlights. It dates from the latter part of the 19th. century. Please see our other listings of similar panels.
