Group of Four Chinese Sui / Tang Dynasty Armoured Horse & Riders with Oxford TL Test

This very rare and exceptional group of four pottery equestrian figures was made during the Sui Dynasty (AD 581 - 618); they are reported to have all come from the same excavation. They are made from a buff-coloured pottery and "cold painted" in various coloured pigments. The horses and the riders wear armour. Note also the riders' helmets with pointed tops. 

The height of each is between 28 and 28.5 cm. One has possible repairs to the body and one has a crack to the body that has been stabilised inside the body, the other two appear free from repair. Overall, as we hope our pictures clearly show, condition is exceptional.

As with many of our finer items, we have had one of these items tested by Oxford Authentications, the ONLY testers of ancient pottery accepted by ALL major dealers, auction houses and museums worldwide, and the Thermoluminescence Analysis Report that will accompany this item is shown with our pictures; this confirms the date of manufacture as "between 1000 and 1600 years ago". 

For information: some people may suggest these figures were made during the following Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). We show for reference from the National Museum of Chinese History's fine book, "A Journey into China's Antiquity" (ISBN 7-5054-0507-1), an identical example from an excavation from Xi'an in 1982 dated to the Sui Dynasty.
