This is a thangka in cotton of Mahakala, circa the 18th century from Mongolia. Depicted on the painting is six-armed, black, ferocious Mahakala, stomping on the elephant god, Ganesha. Mahakala’s upper left hands hold prayer beads and a trident; the middle hands hold a hand drum and lasso. His front hands hold a vajra chopper and a skull bowl. This is a circa 18th century very finely painted thangka of a rare form of Rahu, done in mineral pigments and gold, from Mongolia. Depicted on the thangka is the demon-god Rahu, with his half-snake body, the main red head of a bull, two other heads of an ogre, and the top one, of a white wolf. Normally, Rahu will have all his heads of an ogre. A five-lobed ritual crown or “ringga” made of papier-mache, circa the 19th century from Mongolia. The overall motif of each lobe is scrolling vines with a flaming jewel at the top. Painted on each lobe is a celestial Buddha, each in his traditional color and gesture. Each lobe measures 2.75 inches at the base, 4.5 inches at the shoulders and 6.75 inches in height. The ringga is in very good condition over-all; one of the lobes has a superficial crack.
