| An antique Kalanguya “bulul” (rice granary god) from the Kalanguya people of southern Ifugao province, the Philippines circa early 1900s. Carved from red narra heavy hardwood in the stylistic tradition of the Kalanguya, the bulul’s face is owl-shaped, with etched points for the eyes, wide and flat nose, plain slit for the lips and just a hint for ears. Her arms hang sideways and her legs and feet are rudimentary like her arms and hands. The crusty patina, formed from rubbed rice cakes and poured rice wines during years of rice harvest festivals, is evident on her face, arms and front legs. This bulul was reportedly collected in the 1960s and bears the #10 on the underside of the base (10th in a series of a collection of northern Luzon tribal items numbering in the hundreds). Measuring 24 inches tall (including a base 3.5 inches high), 7 inches wide and 4 inches deep, this bulul is in very good condition. The normal age cracks do not diminish the stability and integrity of the sculpture. Truly a tribal sculpture with a powerful and commanding presence, especially when viewed in person.
