| A Gaddang man’s small wooden hat (called “soklong”) from the Gaddang people of northern Luzon, Philippines, circa mid-20th century. The hat (about three inches in diameter and two inches in height) is carved from a solid block of "narra" hardwood. The top of the hat is decorated with snake skin and the side is lined with serrated metal band; around the bottom rim is a half-inch metal band. Attached to the sides are two butterfly-shaped carvings from whole mother-of-pearl shells, measuring about 5 inches across and 2.5 inches in width. Embellishing the hat around the middle are yellow, white and red tiny glass beads; towards the bottom are more bead dangles. Braided man’s hair serves to tuck in the hat to the forehead bangs. This hat is in very good condition; the mother-of-pearl shells have become yellowish with age. The interested viewer can refer to the book, Form and Splendor, by Roberto Maramba, page 101, for a similar soklong. | ||
