| A contemporary Tibetan cotton thangka of The Wheel of Life, using contemporary art materials. It is said that the Wheel of Life is the only image that the Buddha created himself by drawing it on the sand while explaining life's evolutionary process. The thanka depicts the figure of Yama, lord of death, holding the Wheel of Life. In the center of the wheel, a cock, a pig, and a snake spin round and round, signifying desire, delusion and hate, the three primary poisons that drive the unenlightened life cycle. The first circle going out from the center presents actions that bring out positive evolution and happiness in the left and negative actions that bring misery in the right. The next circle presents the six realms, with the gods in heaven at the top and the hell beings in the bottom, the realms of the titans and the pretans in between to the right and the beast and human realms to the left. The last circle of the wheel presents 12 scenes to illustrate the biological process of life and death, beginning with ignorance and ending with old age and death. In the painting, the grinning skulls of Yama's crown create a lively mood in the face of a serious topic. The thangka, with a black wooden frame, measures 14 x 19 inches, and is in excellent condition. | ||
