Antique red thangka Shakyamuni & the 18 Arhats 18th c.

A red thangka in cotton (unframed) of Shakyamuni and the 18 Arhats (Buddhist holy men), circa the late 18th or early 19th century from Mongolia. Portrayed on the thangka is Shakyamuni, the Buddha of the present age, in his earth-touching gesture (“bhumisparsa mudra”) and holding a black begging bowl. He is flanked by his two great disciples, Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, and surrounded by the 18 Arhats. Shakyamuni is seated on a lotus throne atop a pedestal supported by two lions. At the bottom right and left corners are the guardians of the four directions. Gold is used to draw the figures, highlighted with black and white for the hair and eyes. The thangka measures 10 x 12.5 inches, and is in very good to excellent condition. The small water stain at the lower right side does not affect the overall quality of the painting. The red thangka is reputedly the rarest among the multi-color, black, gold and red ground thangka genre.
