Antique damaru or hand drum- 8 Auspicious Signs motif

A damaru or hand drum with the 8 Auspicious Signs finely embroidered in black silk, circa late 19th or early 20th century from Mongolia. The drum is approximately 3.5 inches in diameter, with a height of 3.25 inches. The total length from the handle of the drum to the tip of the tail is approximately 32 inches, plus 8 inches of tassels. This damaru is made up of two rounded bowl-like heavy dark wood, attached together. Where the attachment meets are three vajra or dorje silver filigree designs attached to a red cloth. Two seed-like clappers are attached to this cloth. When rotated the clappers hit the green leather stretched on top of the two bowl-like wooden parts and produce a rattling sound. (A damaru is sounded by rotating it between the fingers to call the dakinis, who are pleased with the clapping sound. The damaru sound is also a symbol of impermanence in the world.) Between the red cloth, connecting the drum and the lower portion which looks like a tail, is a silver circle-with-inside cross design, attaching eight different kinds of big, old rounded beads in different colors. A silver four-petal flower attaches the beads to the tail portion, made of three pieces of silk cloths, with a cloudlike embroidered design on a maroon cloth at the top, and arrow-like silks at the lower part. Red tassels are hung to the cloudlike design via round silver-with-inside cross design, coral beads and pearls. There are three 19-inch long pieces of arrow-like silk cloths, about 2 inches in width in the middle. On the outermost black silk is an exquisite embroidery of the 8 auspicious signs of Buddhism, 4 signs on each side. The middle portion is a blue-green-floral silk piece. Yellow and green silk tassels hang at the tip, suspended by round silver-with-cross design and small coral beads. This damaru is in good condition, with evidence of heavy ritual use especially at the red cloth used for twirling the drum with the fingers. It's a lovely and exquisite piece of ethnographic art
