Antique thangka Rahu in rare form 18th c.

This is a circa 18th century very finely painted thangka of a rare form of Rahu, done in mineral pigments and gold, from Mongolia. Depicted on the thangka is the demon-god Rahu, with his half-snake body, the main red head of a bull, two other heads of an ogre, and the top one, of a white wolf. Normally, Rahu will have all his heads of an ogre. Here, Rahu emerges from a triangular water-filled world, his hands bearing the triangular dagger, or phurbu, which is pointed at a golden human effigy inside a smaller triangular world. Snakes slither over his golden hair. Red orange flames moving in opposite directions from an imaginary central vertical line provide stability to the central figure. The thangka measures 5.75 x 7.25 inches, and is in excellent condition. (Note: This thangka will come with a contemporary frame.)
