| This is a thangka in cotton of Mahakala, circa the 18th century from Mongolia. Depicted on the painting is six-armed, black, ferocious Mahakala, stomping on the elephant god, Ganesha. Mahakala’s upper left hands hold prayer beads and a trident; the middle hands hold a hand drum and lasso. His front hands hold a vajra chopper and a skull bowl. Mahakala’s jewelry and hair are in gold, and so are the other figures. He wears a garland of severed heads. Mahakala’s retinue includes the ogres Kshetrapala on a black bear and Dugon Trakshad on a black horse. The ogres red Jinamitra and black Takkiraja, each holding a drum, dance on prostrated persons. At the lower right is Palden Lhamo, riding on her mule. At the middle top is a lama, probably Tsong Khapa, inside a gold roundel. On each side of Mahakala are skull bowls with an offering of the senses and torma cakes. A brown floral brocade serves as veil. The reverse of the painting is almost filled with Tibetan inscriptions in black. The painting is approximately 12 x 14.5 inches, and is in excellent condition, with the mineral pigments and gold used in the painting intact and very vibrant. Including the brown brocade surround, the thangka measures 19 x 39 inches. | ||
