Manobo abaca tritik shirt and pants

A rare abaca (banana plant fiber) tritik shirt and pants (locally called “pimokan”), circa the 1950s, maybe earlier, made probably by the Manobo people from south central Mindanao, Philippines. The tritik patterns are created by over-sewing the abaca cloth in waxed thread before dyeing and removing the waxed thread after dyeing the cloth, thus leaving the white designs on this brownish-red naturally-dyed abaca cloth. The patterns on the shirt are a collection of lozenges, Xs and coils, with four pairs of stylized crocodiles in the middle front and back and the eagle’s wing at the back of the neck. With a triangular gusset at the crotch, the pants' patterns basically repeat those of the shirt. The shirt measures 22 inches from shoulder to shoulder and 48 inches from cuff to cuff (arms outstretched), while the pants measure 20 inches from the waist to the hemline. Both the shirt and pants are in excellent condition; there are no holes, tears or repairs.
