| This is an abaca (banana plant fiber) ikat (locally called “bebed”) tubular skirt (“panapisan”) from the Bagobo people of south central Mindanao, Philippines circa the 1970s, maybe earlier. The skirt, organically dyed of red, black, highlights of yellow (and natural abaca color), is made of two symmetric panels, stitched end to end and selvedge to selvedge. There are two three-and- a-half inch central bands of black on white hooks-and-tendril pattern (“ramut”) and two thinner bands of similar pattern. Measuring 45 x 27 inches (or 54 inches around), the skirt is in excellent condition. The fabric surface is shiny, due to polishing with a hard clam shell and the application of beeswax. | ||
