| These are circa late 19th or early 20th century male ivory (“gading”) ear discs/plugs (“pamarang”) from the Bagobo people of south central Mindanao, Philippines. In very good condition and quite shiny, each disc is about 2 inches in diameter and a half of an inch thick. There are nips on the knob and side of one disc. Two strands of fine brown beads, about 12 inches long, attach the two discs. A researcher writes that the “pamarang” is the most prized possession of wealthy Bagobo males. The photographs attached can not capture the natural sheen and brownish patinated streaks these ivory discs have acquired over the years. These ivory plugs are much more beautiful in person. Refer to David Baradas’ catalog, entitled Land of the Morning, page 72 plate 27 for a similar ear ornament. | ||
