Gaddang beaded red cotton blouse

From the Gaddang people of northern Luzon, Philippines, comes this beaded hand-sewn red blouse circa the 1930s, probably much earlier. The blouse is made of red commercial cotton cloth, embellished with beads, buttons and metal dangles. At the front bodice is a button arrangement along the buttonhole area, with one red button to tack in the blouse. Hanging from the middle hem of the front bodice is a collection of very small brass cones, suspended from yellow-white-red-black beaded dangles. On the blouse’s back bodice is a beadwork of triangle and diamond shapes of fine white and yellow beads, forming a T-pattern. At the sides and hems are similar bead arrangements, with a row of old white commercial buttons at the hem area. The cuffs also have a similar beaded pattern, with a twine-like threadwork in the middle. Measuring 12 inches from shoulder to hemline and 45 inches from cuff to cuff (arms outstretched), the blouse is in very good-excellent condition, with one chipped button.
