Maranaw tube garment

From the Maranaw people of northwestern Mindanao, Philippines, comes this tubular garment (locally called “malong a landap”) circa the1960s. This malong is of thick silk fabric (probably silk and cotton?). Joining the yellow and maroon panels are tapestry-weave bands (called “langkit”), the narrower bands (2 inches wide) called “tobiran” and wider band (4 inches wide) called “lakban”. The malong serves as clothing, blanket, baby carrier, and private space for two bodies. While most malongs can be worn by either sex, certain types can be worn only by women. Measuring 66 inches x 32 inches (or 64 inches around), this malong is in very good condition; there are no noticeable holes or tears, but a few dirt accumulation.
