Mandaya abaca cloth bag

From the Mandaya people of southeastern Mindanao, Philippines comes this abaca (banana plant fiber) cloth bag circa the 1950s. The bag is made of abaca, dyed in natural colors. The pattern on the abaca bag is the signature Mandaya motif of a human ( called “u-tau”). The bag has an edging in front of a cloth appliqué, embroidered with diamond, coil and zigzag designs in black, white and yellow threads. Abaca twine in matching colors was braided for the handles. Measuring 9.5x13 inches, the bag is in very good condition, there are no holes, tears or repairs.
