| An embroidered woman’s blouse (called “bado”) from the Mandaya people of eastern Mindanao, Philippines circa the 1950s. The blouse is made of commercial red and dark blue cotton, densely embroidered front and back and along the upper sleeves in geometric motifs. The embroidery, so meticulous and precise, appears to form part of the weave itself. Measuring 15 inches from shoulder to hemline and 38 inches from cuff to cuff (sleeves outstretched), the blouse is in fair condition, with some fading and 4- inch tears along both back sleeves close to the cuffs(can be seen on the pictures). Please refer to the exhibition catalog, "From the Rainbow's Varied Hue Textiles of the Southern Philippines" edited by Roy W. Hamilton, page 53 for a similar Mandaya blouse. | ||
