These 18th century chairs actually sit rather well.May people automatically think that all Chinese chairs are uncomfortable. Also, there seems to be a misconception, that Chinese chairs can't be used or they are structurally unsound. This is not the case with these chairs. They are strong and can be used. The size is 23x17x39 high. The seat is 21 high. They are made from very dense elm wood and are from Shanxi in northern China. Some other notable features include:turned spindles under the arms, pipe ...click for details

Every piece has a good story. This one is no exception. When we first went to Hong Kong,in the 80's,we were on our way to the Philippines.Carolyn and I would lay over for a day or two to get over jet lag.We would roam up and down Wyndham St for hours, checking out all of the shops. We weren't really buying for our shop;but we did get some pieces for ourselves. We still have some of these pieces, but others we have parted with. Not that this has much to do with this gate bench, but in some ways ...click for details

This jewel of a cabinet has been sitting in my workshop for quite some time.I've been working on the piece,on and off,for about two years. Most of the restoration was finished. However,I still needed to repair the bottom of the "wood hinges".The bottom,(please see detail photo #11)where the pin fits into the frame, was completely worn down.By all indications, this wearing, was done a long time ago.At some point, hand made metal spikes were driven up into the bottom of the wood pins. The market seems to be innundated with these Shanxi Cinnabar Cabinets. Many of these have either been restored or completely refinished. This cabinet is all original! The bronze door plates are also original. The overall condition of this piece is almost perfect. The cabinet was maintained very well.It probably sat in the same place for 200 years. In the past, whenever we had a piece in this condition, from any country,we were accused of misrepresentation. There are examples of pieces, where the piece lo ...click for details

This is a very old table.Probably 300 years or perhaps older. Possibly MING. The black lacquer is original. The woods are YUMU on the base, humpback stretcher, circles, legs, bamboo edge detailing and spandrels. The floating panel is fruitwood(?).The size is 38 5/8x38 5/8x34 1/4 high. Many times, the size of a piece reveals secrets about a piece; especially a Chinese piece.

This early, red lacquer cabinet,is like a little jewel...it is a little jewel. It was made during the Kangxi Period, around 1700 + or -.It is "super fantastic"!!!!! This cabinet is similar to the Square Corner Cabinet in the Palace Museum Collection. It is in excellent condition. Unlike the Palace cabinet, this cabinet has all of the original appointments, including the bronze caps on the feet. There are no apparent restorations or repairs. The size is 33.5x20.5x62.5. This late Qing Dynasty Display Cabinet is a very good example of a "softwood" piece imitating a Classical hardwood piece. This cabinet is directly related to the Huang Hua Li cabinets that have recently sold at auction for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Although this display cabinet is made from Yumu-Northern Elm,it is still very well realized. The carving is well executed and done in a Early Traditional Style, sometimes called "scrolling grass".Also, the finish on the ...click for details

This small Chinese KANG Table is like a little jewel. The size is 27 1/2 x 13 1/2 x 11 High. The table is 18th century. The top is lacquered in Cinnabar, which has faded over time, to a lovely rose color. When our friend Curtis Evarts was here in September 2005,he used this table to demonstrate some of the positive attributes of the best Antique Chinese Furniture. I had this table up on this site a few months ago.I sold the table and it came back.

Cashi,at one time, had a good selection of Edo and early Meiji pieces. This is one piece that we still have. The condition is all original, including the hardware. It may have been used as a apothecary/medicine chest filled with love potions and herbs. This one has 16 drawers. The size is 28 x 13 x 16 high. The wood is Sugi/Cedar; a favorite of the Japanese. Original finish. Early 19th century
