| This jewel of a cabinet has been sitting in my workshop for quite some time.I've been working on the piece,on and off,for about two years. Most of the restoration was finished. However,I still needed to repair the bottom of the "wood hinges".The bottom,(please see detail photo #11)where the pin fits into the frame, was completely worn down.By all indications, this wearing, was done a long time ago.At some point, hand made metal spikes were driven up into the bottom of the wood pins. This spike, lifted the door enough, allowing the door to swing freely. This old rusty spike had to be surgically removed. This was no easy task.Generally, the standard procedure for repairing the wood pin,is to back cut the pin,and insert a new extension on the bottom of the round pin. Before doing this step, the corroded spike had to be removed. The wood on this 18th century cabinet is Nanmu(Chinese Cedar). It is quite hard and not easy to cut(especially a straight cut),making this repair even more difficult. The size of the cabinet is 43x25x74 high.Other attributes include:beaded moulding throughout, original hardware(except 2 replacements),original cinnabar lacquer interior with ramie and original carved spandrels/brackets at the bottom below the doors. The cabinet has its' original "purple zitan" finish. | |||||||||||||||
