Chinese Gate Bench

Every piece has a good story. This one is no exception. When we first went to Hong Kong,in the 80's,we were on our way to the Philippines.Carolyn and I would lay over for a day or two to get over jet lag.We would roam up and down Wyndham St for hours, checking out all of the shops. We weren't really buying for our shop;but we did get some pieces for ourselves. We still have some of these pieces, but others we have parted with. Not that this has much to do with this gate bench, but in some ways it does...On later trips we began to buy Chinese antiques for CaShi.One of our first contacts was one of the finest dealers in China.Just before another trip to H.K.,we let him know that we wanted some gate benches. When we went to his warehouse in the city, we were surprised to find benches stacked high and low in one of the rooms of his "warehouse".We could take our pick.Thinking back,I probably should have bought more, but in those days, with so much to choose from, one could be picky.Coming from a restorer and collector stand point,I have always looked for original pieces. This bench is one of those. It is a true antique in the raw.It has only been cleaned and repaired. There are a few very small recarves on the spandrel tips. One of the end apron sections may be replaced, but by the appearance of the wood, this was done a long time ago.The bench is made from old growth elm timber. It is from Shanxi. The age of the bench is 17th century or earlier. The pattern on the spandrels is a combination of scrolling grass and a lotus bud.The apx. size is 47x8x20 high. The top is made from a single thick plank of elm.Two butterfly inserts have been inset into the bottom to keep the top from splitting. The horse hoof feet are all intact.Oh yes,we never got over our jet lag or our love for Chinese antiques.
