Coffer Table
We call this a "False Coffer".This is a super fantastic relic.Displaying both original red and black lacquer.Original hardware. Early 18th century.SHANXI! This 18th Century single drawer 'coffer' is from Shanxi province in northern China. It is made of elm wood (yumu) and retains much of its original red and black lacquer. It also has the original iron hasp and boss head nails which hold the two layers of the drawer front together. The carving has a certain exuberance (Curtis Evarts calls it 'early florid style') that is indicative of furniture that is 18th century and older. It is well documented in the CL Ma book that this particular type of carving was passed down from early Buddhist times in China and retained in the Northern Provinces well into the 19th century. Of particular note on this piece are the floral motifs. In the center of the drawer front is a single twelve petal flower. There are two lotus buds on either side. The rest of the carved motifs are scrolling foliage or scrolling grasses. Below the drawer are three panels, each with a pierced carved lozenge called a taohuan, filled with a blossom. In the center panel is a nine petal chrysanthemum and on either side, the panels have peach blossoms (4 petal flowers). This piece is closely related to the drawings, figure 1, on page 27 of the CL Ma book, Traditional Chinese Furniture from the Greater Shanxi Region.
