| A rare and very attractive, flattish, bottle-shaped vase with a beautiful, iron-red, hare-fur glaze with a mottled section in black and grey on the neck. Made by the important Danish potter Niels THORSSON. Signed: NT for Royal Copenhagen. Dated 1963. H 20.5 cm. Condition: Perfect. BIOGHRAPHY: Niels THORSSON (1898–1975). A leading ceramic maker and designer of Swedish origin, who worked for Royal Copenhagen most of his career. Thorsson’s work is characterized by a great sense for beauty and elegance which is achieved as a result of his perfectionistic fusion of form and glaze. The high point of his work took place during the 1940 and 50s, from which period we have a number of very fine unica works. Thorsson also created a series of beautiful vases and bowls in porcelain with bright red and bluish glazes towards the end of his career. Otherwise the work he undertook in the 1960s and until his death, mainly designs for mass production, are greatly inferior in both quality and aesthetics in comparison to his earlier studio pieces. | ||||||||||
