A very sophisticated tea-bowl by Gutte ERIKSEN

A very sophisticated tea-bowl by Gutte ERIKSEN in a finely thrown, brown stoneware with lobed shape and deep grooves all-over. Finished with an attractive, running ash glaze in grayish-blue tones that pools at the bottom. Signed: G (artist’s monogram). Made during the 1960s. H 7 cm, D 11 cm. Condition: Perfect. BIOGRAPHY: • Gutte ERIKSEN ( b. 1918 ) was a student of Bernard Leach (1887-1979), whose folk ceramics served as an inspiration for her early works. During the 1970s and 80s her work became increasingly influenced by Japanese ceramic types and styles. The best pieces from her mature period reflect a great fondness for raku ware. These finely thrown pieces are both delicate and sophisticated, something which is accentuated by the special ash glaze she created for them.
