Jens Jakob Bregnoe: young woman eating grapes
A rare and highly attractive figure made of brown- and blue glazed stoneware depicting a sensual, naked woman eating grapes. The figure is reclining on a square dias and may indicate a scene from a Baccenalia. Unsigned, but certainly by the important Danish Art Deco sculptor Jens Jakob Bregnoe (1877–1946). It is not a serie-produced item, but would appear to be either unique or a proto-type. Most likely made at Saxbo, a major stoneware producer located in Herlev (Copenhagen) from 1930–1968. The piece itself dates from the mid- to late 1930s. H 24 cm, L 20 cm. CONDITION: Minor unglazed area on bottom back of base (see pic. no. 6), otherwise perfect.
