Very rare round Rahal bronze elephant bell. A Thai ancient belief, that a lunar eclipse is caused by an evil god of darkness named "Rahul" who eats the moon. This symbol of disaster can only be averted when people make loud noises, like fire crackers, to chase the evil god away. Beautiful natural patina. Modern black display mount included. Circa 1850 to 1920. Size: 2 3/4 inch diam bell, 9 inch tall (including stand), 3.5 x 5 inch base.

Burmese Elephant Bell With Leather Collar. This handmade, rustic, bronze bell was used by the Burmese villagers to locate elephants when they grazed their way into the jungle, then in the last 30 to 60 years it was modified to fit a cow or water buffalo, with the leather strap. We kept it in this state for the serious Asian bell collectors. Please see closeups for the unique design detail and maker marks of this bronze bell. Elephant bell size: 4" diam, leather collar: 34" long.
