Antique Japanese yoshido, or summer door. Yoshido are crafted from sugi (Japanese cedar), take (bamboo) and reed, and are used in the summer months in place of traditional shoji doors. Their design allows for ample ventilation, while still providing privacy and protection from pests. They are designed to slide horizontally, but can be displayed in a variety of ways, and work very well as a screen when hinged together. Japanese antique decorative roof tile, fashioned in traditional style of Kawada clay. Good overall condition; slightly dusty, particularly in the back, with one small chip near the bottom right side (see photos for close-up). Taisho-Period (c.1920); handsome blue-gray patina. 14 inches wide, 13.5 inches tall and 6 inches deep; approximately 24 pounds. This item dates to the Taisho-Period (c.1920), and is carved from a solid piece of beautifully grained keyaki (zelkova), a Japanese hardwood prized by wood crafters and furniture makers.
