Mizusashi of typical dark brown Bizen stoneware with small inclusions, the side with constriction and one impression. On the shoulder decoration of engraved lines in the shape of waves. Patches of yellow and gray straw glaze. The dark brown clay has turned purplish at places. At bottom impressed mark. Japan, Meiji period, prob. 20th century.
Height 5 1/8 in. (13.2 cm); diameter at neck 5 ½ in. (14.3 cm).

Sturdy storage jar with brown glaze and yellow spot of ash glaze over the brown ribbed body of stone ware. Sloping shoulder with very short neck. Dense clay with small inclusions that reminds of Tamba ware or Shigaraki. Height 7 ½ inches, width 6 inches at the neck. Japan, Bizen, 19th century. Glaze partly rubbed off at upper edge and at the body where the oiece is held, otherwise very good condition.

Stoneware bottle with a short neck with rolled lip used for storing sake on board of ships. Body and neck ribbed, decorated with a yellowish brown slip-like patch of glaze on the shoulder. Height 12 inches. Japan, Edo period, 19th century. Some irregularities due to firing, excellent condition.

a) Vase in the shape of a double gourd. On a reddish-brown stoneware base patches of a dark brown glaze have been thinly applied, partly covered again by patches of greenish-yellow ash glaze. On the bottom imprinted seal: Momoyama or Tôzan. H 7 3/8 inches. Small firing crack on the lower bulb. b) Vase in the shape of a mallet with a circular body and an elongated, square neck. Over a reddish-brown clay a typical brown glaze has been applied with irregular spots. In the bottom seal: Momoyama or Tôzan. Height 9 inches; diameter 4 ¾ inches. Mint condition.

Tôzan is either the name of a potters’s studio, or an artist’s name. The name Tôzan is found frequently among potters of the Bizen tradition, usually referring to the background of the family or studio, tracing it back into the Momoyama period.
