Although unmarked, this pattern has been attributed to Herculaneum by several authors. Overall good condition with minor knife scratches, faint "X" shaped hairline crack on the back that does not appear to go through to the other side, and a very minor back edge chip. Ochre edge. 9.5" diameter, c. 1800. Sidon was the capital of Phoenicia in biblical times. It was a major Mediterranean port and a very prosperous city. The platter has a lovely scalloped edge and floral border. "Holy Bible" mark with title, "Sidon", and "Jacksons Warrented" on reverse. This pattern gets its name from the border of wild roses. A very popular pattern in the 19th century made at several different potteries.
