Ancient Byzantine Anonymous Follis of Christ - Various Emperors and Inscriptions
These lovely coins mark an important turning point in the history of the Christian World. It was the first type of Byzantine (Roman) Coin minted by an Emperor who removed his portrait, replaced it with Jesus and declared that Jesus Christ was the King of Kings.
*** Romanus III, 1028-1034 AD ***
Obverse: +EMMANONHA, Bust of Christ facing wearing nimbus cruciger, palladium and colobium and holding book of Gospels.
Reverse: Cross on three steps, IS XS above, bAS ILE bAS ILE below.
*** Constantine VIII, 1020-1030 AD. ***
Obverse: Facing bust of nimbate Christ, pellets in the arms of nimbus, wearing pallium and colobium, holding the Gospels in both hands.
Reverse: +IhSUS /XRISTUS /bASILEU /bASILE, in four lines; (Jesus Christ - King of Kings)
*** Basil II & Constantine VIII, 1023 - 1028 A.D. ***
Obverse + EMMANOVHL, facing bust of Christ, wearing nimbus cruciger, two pellets in each cross limb, pallium and colobium and holding ornamented Gospels with both hands, to left IC, to right XC;
Reverse + IhSuS / XRISTuS / bASILEu / bASILE (Jesus Christ King of Kings), ornaments above and below inscription.
*** Nicephorus III. A.D. 1078-1081. ***
Obverse: Bust of Christ facing, wearing nimbus cross, pallium and colobium, and raising r. hand in benediction; in left hand, scroll; to left, IC; to right, XC (Jesus Christ).
Reverse: Latin cross with X at centre, and globule and two pellets at each extremity; in lower field, on either side, floral ornament; in upper field, on either side, crescent.
*** Michael IV. A.D. 1034-1041. ***
Obverse: +EMMANOVHA. Three-quarter length figure of Christ antiphonetes standing facing, wearing nimbus cross, pallium and colobium, and raising right hand in benediction; in left hand, book of Gospels; in field to left, IC; in field to right, XC.
Reverse: Jewelled cross, with pellet at each extremity; in the angles, IC-XC/NI-KA/.
