Antique ring with an agate Gryllus cameo, depicting the profiles of two bearded men, a lady and ram’s head close set in gold, the setting 1820 ca.
1760 ca.
Sardonyx cameo of a Chimera consisting of four heads, Alexander the Great in the Character of Ammon, with ram’s horn, and whose hair merges with the beard of an elderly man whose hair in turn merges with the beard of another man, surmounted by a ram with prominent horn.
Chimerae or intaglios composed of animal and human heads were popular in the ancient worl not only as seals but also as charms bringing good luck, prosperity and fertility. They were reproduced, as in this example, by cameo cutters in the 18th century. Here, the ram, who symbolises pastoral prosperity, is also used to indicate the divinity of Alexander, worshipped in Egypt in the temple of Thebes, as Alexander Ammon, the God with ram’s horns, that is protector and leader of the flock.
